Psychological Testing
Psychological Testing can be helpful for a variety of reasons. Sometimes people can use testing to help confirm or rule out a suspected behavioral health diagnosis. In these cases testing can serve as an additional source of information. Examples of this include testing to determine if an individual may be experiencing an Autistic Spectrum Disorder, Bi-polar Disorder or ADHD. Testing can also help provide information on overall intellectual functioning, academic functioning, strengths, learning styles and worldview. Other times psychological testing can provide valuable information which can help inform the therapeutic process by providing other health care providers with a broad range of additional information allowing them to better individualize their treatment approach. This can sometimes be helpful when progress in therapy is slower than expected.
Forensic Assessment
Forensic Assessment refers to an assessment, which will be used to aid the court system in some way. Many times it can be helpful for the court to have detailed information about a person’s history, their current functioning and any behavioral health concerns the individual may experience when making decisions. The forensic assessment does not determine guilt or innocence, but instead provides information to the court on how to better understand the individual.
Forensic Comprehensive Behavioral Health Assessments are formal detailed behavioral health assessments, which summarize an individual’s history and current concerns. This type of report can help highlight the needs an individual has as well as how these needs can be met through treatment.
Psychological testing can be added to this comprehensive assessment creating a forensic psychological assessment. The advantages to this type of assessment is that in addition to historical data from a variety of sources, sophisticated psychological testing can provide another source of information to create a rich clinical picture.
I also provide risk assessments for violence, and risk assessment for adolescents or adults who have sexually offended.
Neuropsychological Assessment
I can conduct neuropsychological assessments for children, adolescents and adults. Neuropsychological assessment is an assessment of how the brain functions and can provide information on motor and sensory perception, language, academic functioning, learning and memory, intelligence, executive functioning, attention and processing speed, as well as emotional and behavioral management. It can be helpful in answering a variety of questions related to how someone may function after a brain injury or due to a variety of medical concerns such as fetal alcohol spectrum disorders, and a variety of neurocognitive disorders that can affect the brain. I receive ongoing training and consultation in this area to do this work at this time.
